Over the Black Sea, a Russian fighter jet reportedly shot down a US drone. On November 25, the incident allegedly occurred close to the Crimean peninsula. The Russian Defense Ministry has not confirmed the incident. Still, a ministry spokesman stated that the nation’s air defenses were on high alert due to increased activity by NATO warplanes in the region. The US has not remarked on the shot down by a Russian jet. The incident comes amid tensions between the US and Russia and between NATO and Russia.

In recent months, NATO warplanes have been intercepting Russian warplanes more often, and there have been several close calls between the two sides. In October, a Russian jet came within just a few feet of a US Navy plane over the Black Sea.

And in September, a Russian jet flew close to a US Air Force plane in international airspace over the Baltic Sea. Both incidents were seen as deliberate provocations by the Russian military. The increased tensions have led to concerns of a possible military confrontation between the US and Russia or between NATO and Russia.

The incident occurred just days after the US announced withdrawing from a key arms control treaty with Russia.
The treaty, known as the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, was signed in 1987 and banned the use of nuclear and conventional missiles with a range of 500-5,500 kilometers.
